Mission Santa Clara de Asís

Mission Santa Clara de Asís was founded on January 12, 1777 and was the eighth of 21 California missions to be founded by Spanish missionaries. The mission was built around a large meadow surrounded by redwood forests that once covered the Santa Clara Valley. The main purpose of the mission was to Christianize and educate Native Americans in the area. Over time, Mission Santa Clara de Asís became an important site for agricultural production, producing wheat, corn, olives, vegetables, wine, hides and tallow.

The mission also served as a center of social activity in the region. The Native Americans were taught skills like weaving and tanning hides as well as how to farm crops such as wheat and corn. They also learned about Christianity from the missionaries at the mission. In 1851, Santa Clara College was established on the mission grounds and it eventually grew to become Santa Clara University.

Today, Santa Clara is a thriving city in the San Francisco Bay Area with a population of about 116,000 people. The city has retained its small-town charm, thanks to its historic mission buildings, such as Santa Clara Mission Church which was built in 1777 and remains one of the oldest buildings in Santa Clara.
